Capsol Technologies, based in Norway, has been granted a pre-FEED study by an undisclosed gas turbine manufacturer to develop a carbon capture solution for various gas turbine types in open cycle applications, it said on February 12.

The project's goal is to establish a standardised plant design that outlines both commercial details and technical performance for the implementation of Capsol's technology in North America and the Middle East.

“This order marks another important milestone of the commercialisation of our CapsolGT carbon capture solution and is in line with our strategy to partner with gas turbine manufacturers,” said Philipp Staggat, chief product officer, Capsol.

“Looking at the North American market, CapsolGT has the potential for capture, transport and storage costs below $85/tonne of CO2,” he added. 

CapsolGT, developed by Capsol, is a carbon capture solution specifically designed for open cycle gas turbines used in electricity production and industrial applications. The applicable range for these gas turbines is from 4 MWe to over 100 MWe (megawatts electric).

The technology utilises the waste heat generated by the gas turbine to remove over 95% of the carbon dioxide present in the flue gas while simultaneously generating additional electricity. This standalone solution is particularly advantageous in remote locations, eliminating the need for extensive cooling, external steam import, and a fresh water supply.

The results of the pre-FEED study are expected to be presented to gas turbine operators and project developers in the second quarter of 2024.
