Italian cruise company Costa Cruises March 14 announced an extension of its partnership with transportation firm LC3 Trasporti for the utilisation of bio-LNG-powered trucks in transporting supplies for its fleet of ships.

In 2024, approximately 25% of the distance required to supply Costa ships based in Europe will be covered by LC3 Trasporti trucks fuelled by bio-LNG, a liquefied biomethane derived from refining livestock waste. This percentage increases to 42% when considering only Italian ports of call, the company said.

The adoption of bio-LNG for road freight transport is expected to yield significant environmental benefits, with Costa Cruises highlighting a reduction in net CO2 emissions by 87% and particulate emissions by almost 96% compared to conventional Euro VI diesel vehicles.

The goods to be transported encompass various categories, including food, beverages, and technical supplies, originating from Costa Cruises' warehouses in Genoa and destined for its ships in ports such as Kiel, Hamburg, Venice, Taranto, and Trieste.

The collaboration between Costa Cruises and LC3 Trasporti commenced last year with the delivery of supplies for a Costa ship departing from the port of Kiel. Notably, the transition to bio-LNG trucks resulted in substantial emissions reductions, Costa stated. In 2023 alone, out of a total distance travelled of approximately 115,000 km, net CO2 emissions were reduced by 12,200 kg, and particulate emissions were diminished by approximately 384,000 mg.

"After a first positive experience in 2023, we have decided to extend our collaboration with LC3 Trasporti, an Italian partner that shares our values and vision," stated Marco Diodà, vice president procurement & supply chain at Costa Cruises.
