US engine manufacturer Cummins has developed the industry's first unified, fuel-agnostic engine systems, it announced on February 14.

The Columbus-based company, which manufactures diesel and natural gas engines and related components, said it had developed engine systems that consist of mostly similar components below the head gasket, but above the gasket, can be equipped with different components for different fuel types, including low-carbon ones such as gas and hydrogen.

"Having a variety of lower carbon options is particularly important considering the variation in duty cycles and operating environments across the many markets we serve," the president of Cummins' engine business Srikanth Padmanabhan explained. "There is no single solution or 'magic bullet' that will work for all application types or all end users."
