DTE Vantage and NextEra Energy have commenced the conversion of biogas from the City of Riverview landfill in Michigan into renewable natural gas (RNG), DTW said on March 21.

The project, facilitated by Riverview Energy Systems ─ a joint venture between DTE Vantage and a subsidiary of NextEra Energy Resources, aims to convert an existing landfill gas-to-renewable electricity project into a new facility. This facility will capture biogas generated at the landfill and upgrade it to pipeline-quality natural gas, which will then be channeled into a DTE Energy natural gas pipeline for use by transportation fuel customers.

“The greenhouse gas we capture and utilise at the Riverview Land Preserve landfill not only reduces carbon emissions in the area but also displaces higher-emissions transportation fuels for greater environmental benefit, all while generating additional income for the City,” said Kevin Dobson, vice president of biomass, DTE Vantage.

“This collaboration underscores NextEra Energy Resources’ commitment to developing solutions in pursuit of leading the energy transition,” said Ross Groffman, vice president at NextEra Energy Resources.

DTE Vantage manages and operates over 60 energy projects across 16 states and one Canadian province,
