Enbridge Gas, Canada’s largest natural gas distribution company serving 3.8mn customers in Ontario, said November 10 it had entered into a partnership with US gas producer EQT to purchase 15 petajoules (PJ) of certified natural gas.

The purchase, over a one-year term from November 2022 until October 2023, will come from EQT’s production portfolio, 66% of which has been certified as responsibly sourced gas (RSG) under both the Equitable Origin EO100™ Standard for Responsible Energy Development and the MiQ methane standard. EQT is both the largest producer of natural gas in the US, accounting for 4.5% of total production, and its largest producer of certified natural gas.

“As we seek ways to further diversify and balance our company’s gas supply portfolio, we are pleased to partner with EQT on this significant RSG purchase,” said Jim Redford, vice president, energy services at Enbridge Gas. “As we actively chart a path to a low-carbon future, we expect to pursue additional RSG opportunities when they become available.”

The RSG will be blended into Enbridge’s distribution system, accounting for about 3% of the utility’s annual natural gas purchases. Certified gas is normally sold at a slight premium to non-certified gas, but neither Enbridge nor EQT provided details surrounding the transaction’s commercial terms.
