Vancouver-based EverGen Infrastructure said July 14 it had completed the C$2.1mn acquisition of a 67% interest in Grow the Energy Circle (GrowTEC), a bioenergy venture in southern Alberta producing biogas and renewable energy.

“We are very pleased to complete the acquisition of GrowTEC and begin working alongside the GrowTEC team to convert the project to renewable natural gas (RNG) facility that supports the transition to carbon negative energy production in Alberta,” EverGen CEO Chase Edgelow said.

Located on a family farm near Lethbridge, GrowTEC comprises an operating farm scale biogas facility consisting of an anaerobic digester which has been converting biodegradable waste into biogas and generating renewable power for seven years.

EverGen and GrowTEC will be completing additions to the facility this year that will upgrade the biogas to RNG for injection into the local gas distribution network. An offtake agreement with BC utility FortisBC, a leader in RNG developments in Canada, will contribute to its target of having 15% of its gas supply carbon neutral by 2030.

Phase 1 of the development is expected to produce 80,000 gj/yr of RNG, with completion targeted by Q4 2022. A planned phase 2 expansion would add another 60,000 gj/yr of capacity.
