Jera pens initial deal to supply hydrogen/ammonia to Uniper

By Shardul SharmaJapan’s Jera, through its subsidiary Jera Americas, has signed an initial agreement with Germany’s Uniper Global Commodities and US energy major ConocoPhillips for the sale to Uniper of low carbon hydrogen/ammonia produced in the US, the Japanese company announced on September 5.
The low-carbon hydrogen/ammonia produced under the agreement will be made using energy sources in the US Gulf Coast. The plant is expected to have an initial production capacity of approximately 2mn tonnes/year, and Jera and ConocoPhillips are planning to expand the plant in the future. The project will also include the evaluation and development of carbon capture and storage (CCS) facilities.
Jera said that the agreement is a significant step forward in its efforts to decarbonise its operations and contribute to the global energy transition. The company is aiming to achieve net-zero CO2 emissions by 2050, and low-carbon hydrogen/ammonia is a key part of its decarbonisation strategy.
Uniper is also committed to decarbonisation and has set a target of reducing its CO2 emissions by 50% by 2030.
