Japan’s Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) and Kuala Lumpur-based TNB Power Generation have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to promote the development and exchange of information on clean energy technologies in Malaysia, MHI said on June 7.

The collaboration between MHI, through its power solutions brand Mitsubishi Power, and TNB Genco will focus on three key areas related to clean power generation. These areas include the hydrogen and ammonia value chain, with a focus on hydrogen production, supply, logistics, storage, and infrastructure. The second area is low-carbon fuel co-combustion technology in thermal plants, and the third area is CO2 capture.

The partners will conduct studies and share experiences and technical know-how to advance cleaner power generation in Malaysia. This knowledge exchange will support TNB Genco in its efforts to reduce its emissions intensity by 35% and coal generation capacity by 50% by 2035, as part of its commitment to achieving net zero emissions by 2050, MHI said.

"We look forward to extending our support and strengthening partnership with TNB Genco to jointly explore capabilities around innovative energy technologies that help accelerate the country's net zero emission goals. This MoU reaffirms our continued commitment to develop technologies that help our partners in Malaysia and across APAC deliver a sustainable future,” Akihiro Ondo, CEO, Mitsubishi Power Asia Pacific, said.
