Osaka Gas of Japan and CPC Corporation of Taiwan have entered into an agreement to conduct joint studies on carbon neutral solutions, including the introduction of e-methane to the energy market in Taiwan, the Japanese company said on September 28. The companies will also explore other new energy options, such as hydrogen, ammonia, and biogas.

e-methane is synthetic methane produced from CO2 and non-fossil fuel-based feedstock, such as green hydrogen. It is a new energy source that is seen as a solution to a seamless energy transition to a carbon neutral society. Since it consists of the main component of natural gas, e-methane is compatible with the existing gas infrastructure, including LNG terminals and gas equipment for consumers.

Osaka Gas and CPC have a long history of cooperation in LNG procurement and engineering services. Osaka Gas has provided engineering services to CPC for the commissioning of the Yung-An LNG terminal and the construction and operations of other terminals.

The Japanese company  aims to achieve carbon neutrality across its corporate group by 2050. To realise this ambition, the company is pursuing net zero solutions, including e-methane, and driving e-methane technology development through R&D activities and demonstration projects in Japan.

Osaka Gas has announced four e-methane projects outside Japan so far: Cameron in the USTallgrass in the USSantos in Australia, and IHI-Petronas in Malaysia,
