Thai state-owned PTT Exploration and Production Public Company (PTTEP) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Bangkok-based Kasetsart University to advance research on carbon storage sites, the company said on March 26.

The collaboration between PTTEP and Kasetsart University is aimed at conducting research studies in the fields of geoscience and petroleum engineering. Furthermore, the partnership seeks to cultivate professionals in petroleum exploration and production, equipping them with the necessary skills and knowledge to contribute to the energy sector's sustainable development. One of the key objectives of this collaboration is to explore potential carbon storage sites, a crucial step towards Thailand's transition to a low-carbon society.

“These are pivotal to driving the carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology development, leading Thailand to a low-carbon society,” PTTEP said.

The collaboration with Kasetsart University is part of PTTEP's broader initiative, the PTTEP Subsurface University Energy Connect scheme. Under this scheme, PTTEP has already established partnerships with several leading universities, including Chulalongkorn University, Chiang Mai University, Khon Kaen University, and Mahidol University.

The company said it aims to extend similar academic collaborations to other institutions in the future.

PTTEP is engaged in Thailand's first CCS project at the Arthit offshore gas field. The company is dedicated to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, recognising the adoption of CCS technology as a key strategic enabler to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from its petroleum production processes.
