Renewi, the UK-based waste-to-product company, will supply more than 7.5mn m3/year of biomethane or green gas to Swedish energy company Vattenfall, it said on January 9.

The green gas supplied to Vattenfall will be produced at Renewi's plant in Amsterdam. This facility is dedicated to converting organic waste streams, including food scraps from restaurants and canteens, as well as expired products from supermarkets, into environmentally friendly green gas.

The process involves utilising a digester to extract green gas from organic waste, and the resultant product is seamlessly integrated into the regular gas network.

"Green gas works just as well as natural gas, whether we use it for heating, showering, or cooking. By using more green gas, we make our lives at home a little more sustainable. In this way, we help society move forward and work towards freedom from fossil fuels,” said Cindy Kroon, Vattenfall's customer director for the Dutch market.

Renewi is expected to start supplying green gas in the spring of 2024.
