French energy major Engie on April 16 announced its entry into the Netherlands' biomethane market with the acquisition of two production units.

Located in Hardenberg and Alkmaar, the plants boast annual biomethane production capacities of 90 GWh and 47 GWh respectively, with potential for expansion to 150 GWh and 94 GWh.

Engie’s biomethane production in France stands at 0.7 TWh/year. These two new acquisitions, which follow those of Ixora Energy and Rainbarrow Farm in the UK, strengthen its presence in Europe, bringing its installed production capacity to 1.1 TWh.

"With these two acquisitions in the Netherlands, we have now entered a third country for biomethane production in Europe. We intend to invest steadily in this renewable, local and sovereign energy source,” Cecile Previeu, executive vice president in charge of Engie's infrastructure activities, said.

Engie has set a target of achieving 10 TWh/year of biomethane production across Europe by 2030. Biomethane, a sustainable alternative to natural gas, is produced from organic materials like silage, slurry, and food waste.
