Sempra Infrastructure, a subsidiary of US-based Sempra, on February 2 announced the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) to collaborate on opportunities aimed at advancing the global energy transition.

The partnership aims to enhance project structuring in areas such as LNG, hydrogen, and other decarbonisation efforts in both the US and Japan.

The collaboration builds on the long-standing partnership between Sempra and Japanese companies, with recent efforts highlighted by Sempra Infrastructure's involvement in the Cameron LNG facility and a strategic collaboration with a Japanese consortium under the ReaCH4 project. The ReaCH4 project evaluates potential enhancements to the energy supply chain, emphasising decarbonization through e-natural gas.

Additionally, Sempra Infrastructure is working on the Hackberry carbon sequestration project, with participation from two Japanese companies, near the Cameron LNG facility.

The collaboration aligns with the memorandum of cooperation (MoC) between the US Department of Energy and Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry, focusing on carbon capture, storage, conversion, recycling, and carbon dioxide removal. The MoU between Sempra Infrastructure and JBIC is intended to support the objectives of the MoC.
