Energy infrastructure company South Jersey Industries (SJI) and renewable natural gas (RNG) developer OPAL Fuels said October 23 they had begun construction on a new RNG production facility at an Atlantic County Utilities Authority (AUCA) landfill in Egg Harbour Township, New Jersey.

SJI subsidiary SJI Renewable Energy Ventures, which specialises in developing waste to energy projects, is working with OPAL Fuels on the project, dubbed Atlantic RNG, SJI said.

Another SJI subsidiary, South Jersey Gas, will enter into an interconnection agreement to accept the RNG from Atlantic RNG and blend it into its natural gas distribution system.

“We have been working hard in recent years to enhance our infrastructure to deliver the fuels of the future,” South Jersey Gas president Brent Schomber said. “We are excited to work with ACUA, SJI Renewables, and OPAL Fuels as we celebrate a new milestone of adding RNG to our gas supply.”

Atlantic RNG, the first collaboration between SJI and Opal under a joint venture announced in September, is expected to be operational by mid-2025.
