Italian energy company Edison has inaugurated the Marghera Levante power plant near Venice, which is capable of using up to 50% hydrogen mixed with natural gas, it said on June 16.

The plant features the GT36 turbine from Ansaldo Energia, which can reduce nitrogen oxide emissions by up to 70% and carbon dioxide emissions by up to 30% compared to the average of current Italian thermoelectric plants.

The construction of the Marghera Levante plant spanned four years and required an investment of approximately 400mn euros ($438mn). With an installed capacity of 780 MW and an energy efficiency rating of 63%, the plant is a significant addition to Italy's energy infrastructure.

Edison has also announced its commitment to invest 10bn euros by 2030 for the purpose of facilitating the energy transition, with half of that investment focused on renewable energy sources.
