German biomethane developer Vorn Bioenergy on April 15 announced the launch of its Italian subsidiary, Vorn Bioenergy Italia. This move follows Vorn's acquisition of Alvus, a Bolzano-based project developer in the biogas and biomethane sector, in October 2023.

The expansion into Italy comes as the nation prioritises renewable energy sources. Biomethane, a clean-burning gas produced from organic waste, is poised to play a critical role in Italy's National Energy Strategy.

Established in 2019, Alvus has already developed over 10 biomethane projects, each with a capacity ranging from 500 to 1,000 m3/hour.

"This synergy is set to accelerate the realisation of our shared ambitions to harness green gases to their full potential," stated Christof Erckert, managing director of Vorn Bioenergy Italia and founder of Alvus.

The timing of the expansion aligns with Italy's National Recovery and Resilience Plan, which emphasises the development and utilisation of biomethane. This plan aims to increase biomethane production tenfold by 2026, to estimated 2.3bn m3/year.
