French utility Engie and CMA CGM, a global shipping and logistics company, have partnered for the development of the Salamandre plant in Le Havre, France, Engie said on July 25. The Salamandre plant is a renewable gas production unit that utilises pyrogasification and methanation technologies.
The project aims to address the decarbonisation challenge in the shipping industry, which is known for its significant carbon emissions. By producing renewable gas, the Salamandre plant will provide a cleaner and sustainable alternative to traditional fossil fuels used in maritime transportation, Engie said.
CMA CGM sees the Salamandre project as a strategic partnership to achieve its net zero carbon objective by 2050. The company aims to significantly reduce its carbon footprint and contribute to the global effort to combat climate change.
In addition to the Salamandre project, Engie is also taking steps towards the France KerEAUzen project, which aims to produce synthetic fuel through a combination of renewable hydrogen and CO2 supplied by Salamandre and other local industries. Air France-KLM is set to be the main customer for the e-kerosene produced in this unit.
