Gasum has signed a liquefied biogas supply agreement with fellow Finnish firm Vieremän Lämpö ja Vesi, it said on May 29. Gasum will supply biogas to Vieremän Lämpö ja Vesi's biogas terminal, which is part of a biogas-based project under construction in the municipality of Vieremä.

The project includes a reception terminal for liquefied and compressed biogas, a backup biogas-fired power plant, and a gas filling station for transportation. Gasum will supply liquefied biogas to the terminal, which will be regasified and can also be compressed into compressed biogas for refuelling gas-powered cars. The terminal and gas filling station are expected to be operational in early autumn.

The project aims to create a biogas ecosystem in Vieremä, promoting the use of renewable biofuels and reducing reliance on fossil fuels, Gasum said, adding it will increase the security of energy supply, replace heavy fuel oil in backup power production, and enable industries in Vieremä to transition from fossil gas to biogas. The project also aims to create a market for locally produced biogas, encouraging investments in biogas production by local farms.

Vieremä is a municipality in eastern Finland, known for its metal industry and concrete products manufacturing. The use of biogas will contribute to significant reductions in carbon dioxide emissions, as the lifecycle emissions of biogas are approximately 90% lower than those of traditional fossil fuels, Gasum said.

Gasum's strategic goal is to bring 7 TWh of renewable biogas to the market annually by 2027, resulting in substantial carbon dioxide emissions savings for its customers.
