US oilfield services group Schlumberger said on January 31 it would be providing its DELFI environment digital platform for the Northern Lights carbon transport and storage project led by Equinor off Norway.

Schlumberger said DELFI provided "instant access to CO2 transportation and storage subscriptions and plug-ins while also providing the ability to host other third-party applications, including seamless integration with [Schlumberger's] OSDU data platform."

"Its collection of petrotechnical applications and digital solutions will assist Northern Lights' teams in planning and operational activities, enabling them to work together in a collaborative environment," Schlumberger said.

Northern Lights is expected to store 1.5mn metric tons/year of CO2 under its first stage, and 5mn mt/yr or more under its second. Its developers Equinor, TotalEnergies and Shell aim to start commercial operations in 2024. Initially it will store CO2 from a cement plant and a waste-to-energy station in Norway, but it is expected to receive CO2 from other businesses in Norway and elsewhere in Europe over time.

The Northern Lights group recently hired Transocean for drilling CO2 injection wells and PGS for seismic surveying work.
