Project Canary to provide CCUS assessment to BKV

By Dale LunanProject Canary, a leading assessor of responsibly sourced natural gas, said October 10 it would expand its partnership with privately-owned natural gas producer BKV to provide carbon assessment, monitoring and reporting for the Denver-based producer’s Barnett Zero carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) project in Texas.
Project Canary will deploy its digital Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (dMRV) platform SENSE CCUS, which collects, measures, and provides analytics for emissions data across the CCUS value chain.
Building on the Canary SENSE emissions data platform, SENSE CCUS will provide real-time emissions-driven operational insights, monitoring, and data-driven reporting.
“As the CCUS landscape continues to evolve, this collaboration will pave the way towards a transparent approach to carbon sequestration and bolster trust in the process,” BKV CEO Chris Kalnin said.
The Barnett Zero project will also undergo a Canary Assessment to evaluate performance against industry-established best practices. Data from across BKV's Barnett Zero project will be collected, analysed, and visualised using Project Canary’s dMRV solution, then sent to third-party specialists for separate verification before being transmitted to carbon registries for carbon credit issuance.

BKV expects to begin injecting CO2 under the Barnett Zero project in December, eventually sequestering up to 210,000 tonnes/year. In September, it said it would provide responsibly sourced gas and associated carbon sequestered credits from the Barnett project to France’s ENGIE.
Project Canary has been assessing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions associated with BKV’s Barnett Shale and Marcellus production since late 2021 and early 2022. BKV currently produces about 773mn ft3/day of natural gas from the Barnett and another 140mn ft3/day from the Marcellus.
