Japanese companies Tokyo Gas and Mitsui & Co. announced on March 22 that they have signed an agreement to import biomethane from the US to Japan.

Under this accord, approximately 40,000 m3 of biomethane, sourced from biogas emitted from US landfills, will be liquefied as part of LNG. The first shipment arrived at Tokyo Gas' Ohgishima LNG terminal on March 19.

Biomethane shares identical properties with methane, the primary component of city gas, enabling seamless integration into existing LNG and city gas infrastructure, according to the companies.

Tokyo Gas is committed to achieving net-zero CO2 emissions through collaborations with domestic and international partners. Strategies include the adoption of renewable energy, synthetic methane, biomethane, hydrogen, and carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS).

Mitsui has prioritised securing reliable energy supplies and achieving carbon neutrality. Its efforts toward decarbonization solutions include investing in biomethane production in the US.

Tokyo Gas and Mitsui said they aim to establish an international biomethane supply chain through this partnership, contributing to global decarbonization efforts.
